Getting involved with CPA Australia

Get Involved and Help Shape the Profession

CPA Australia values building and maintaining ongoing partnerships with academics and welcomes your continued involvement. Your expertise, research and classroom insights help shape the direction of the accounting and finance profession, and there are several ways to contribute.

Centres of Excellence

CPA Australia's Centres of Excellence bring together leading experts from across the profession to help inform policy, advocacy, thought leadership and professional resources. Academic representation is important ensuring diverse perspectives are reflected in this work. Nominations from academics are welcome where their expertise aligns with each Centre's focus areas.

The Centres cover Digital Transformation, Environmental, Social and Governance, Ethics and Professional Standards, Reporting, Assurance, Retirement Savings and Taxation. Nominations for the 2026 intake open on 7 September and close on 5 October 2026. For more information, visit CPA Australia’s Centres of Excellence.

Divisional Councils and Committees

Divisional Councils represent members at a local level, providing strategic direction, advocating on behalf of the profession in their region and strengthening connections between members with CPA Australia. They are supported by a range of committees, including branch, discipline-based and special interest committees, which play a role in delivering local events, professional development and member engagement. To find out more, reach out to your local CPA Australia office.

AFAANZ 2026/27 MENTORING PROGRAM

OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM

Mentoring is a partnership where help, support and guidance is provided to facilitate the learning and development of others. The aim is for mentors – experienced or more senior accounting and finance academics – to offer support, motivation, and access to knowledge and assistance to mentees in setting and reaching their development goals. Whilst mentoring can operate in both group and individual settings, this program consists of individual mentors working either online or face-to-face with their mentor. The program is open to AFAANZ individual members and staff at AFAANZ institutional members.

PROGRAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The program will match academics either working in institutional member universities, or who are individual members, with a more senior staff member to:

  • Reflect on and build academic, personal, and professional skills
  • More effectively navigate accounting and finance research, education, and engagement opportunities
  • Grow their leadership capabilities, and
  • Identify opportunities to enhance their potential for career progression.

In the next round of the program, we will accept both early and mid-career mentees and match them with an appropriate mentor.

For the purposes of the program:

  • Early-career academics (ECAs) are typically within five years of PhD completion (allowing for career interruptions), have fewer than eight years of academic or research-related employment, and are usually employed at Levels A or B (associate lecturer or lecturer). They are in the process of establishing an independent research, teaching, and engagement profile.
  • Mid-career academics (MCAs) typically have more than eight years of academic or research-related employment, are approximately 5-15 years post-PhD, and are most likely employed at Level C (senior lecturer) or a newly appointed Level D (associate professor). They have established research and teaching profiles and are developing toward senior leadership and professoriate roles.

AFAANZ is now calling for applications from mentees and mentors interested in taking part in the 2026-27 Mentoring Program. The Program will run from September 2026 to June 2027 and will involve a number of online workshops during this time period. Whilst some mentees and mentors may choose to meet in person, this is not a requirement for the program.

To register your interest, please register as a Mentee or Mentor below (applications close Friday 18 September).

Proposed AFAANZ Digital Finance and Financial Innovation (DFFI) SIG

We are pleased to invite expressions of interest in a proposed new AFAANZ Digital Finance and Financial Innovation Special Interest Group.

Digital technologies and financial innovation are reshaping how markets operate, how firms and investors interact, and how information is reported, disclosed, assured and used. These changes create new research opportunities across accounting and finance, from reporting, governance and regulation to FinTech, digital markets and investor behaviour. The SIG will bring together researchers interested in understanding and shaping this rapidly evolving landscape.

The DFFI SIG aims to build a welcoming and connected community of accounting and finance researchers, educators and PhD candidates with an interest in digital transformation and financial innovation. It will create a space to share ideas, connect with others working on related questions, and facilitate new collaborations.

Areas of interest include:

  • digital reporting, disclosure and assurance;
  • digital assets and blockchain;
  • digital market infrastructure, tokenisation and next-generation trading and settlement;
  • digital platforms across corporate, public and not-for-profit settings; and
  • other emerging financial innovation-related issues where accounting, finance and technology intersect.

The SIG will also help members meet new collaborators, connect across related areas of accounting and finance, and engage with industry, regulators and policymakers.

Whether you are an experienced researcher, early-career academic, educator, or PhD candidate, we warmly invite you to express your interest and join the SIG’s founding community.

Join us in building a connected and welcoming AFAANZ community for researchers interested in digital finance and financial innovation. To register your interest in supporting the SIG, please email info@afaanz.org

New AFAANZ Responsible Science for Accounting & Finance SIG

AFAANZ is pleased to announce the establishment of the new Responsible Science for Accounting & Finance Special Interest Group (SIG).

The SIG will bring together accounting and finance researchers, educators, doctoral candidates and research leaders interested in strengthening the process through which research is conceived, designed, conducted, communicated and evaluated.

Its focus is not on prescribing which research topics should be pursued. Rather, the SIG will promote constructive engagement with research design quality, credibility, transparency, integrity, openness, reproducibility where feasible, responsible use of GenAI, and research training and mentoring.

Planned activities include workshops, seminars, collaborative discussions, mentoring and capacity-building initiatives. The SIG is already developing its inaugural Melbourne sessions for September 2026, focusing on the Responsible Use of GenAI in Research, with further details to follow.

Membership is open to AFAANZ members at an inaugural annual fee of $20 (plus GST).

To register, please go to the SIG webpage at https://www.afaanz.org/interest-group/RSAFSIG15 and click on the “Purchase Subscription” button.  You can also email info@afaanz.org and request for your SIG membership invoice to be created.

Whether you are an experienced researcher, educator, early-career academic or doctoral candidate, we warmly invite you to join the SIG and help build an inclusive community committed to strengthening responsible research practice across accounting and finance.

Join the AFAANZ Responsible Science for Accounting & Finance SIG and become part of its inaugural membership community.
