The AFAANZ community encompasses faculty members from a diverse range of accounting and finance departments, many which are small, with limited opportunities available to access support to aid in their career progression and development.  AFAANZ began mentoring with its inaugural Women’s Mentoring Workshop at the AFAANZ Conference at the Gold Coast in July 2016.  In 2023, the, AFAANZ offered a more formal mentoring program for ECR Women and this expanded to ECRs of all genders in 2024.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM

Mentoring is a partnership where help, support and guidance is provided to facilitate the learning and development of others. The aim is for mentors – experienced or more senior accounting and finance academics – to offer support, motivation, and access to knowledge and assistance to mentees in setting and reaching their development goals. Mentoring can operate in both group and individual settings. While group mentoring in one-off sessions has been successful for women AFAANZ members in the past, it is proposed that this program comprises individual mentors working with individual mentees.

PROGRAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The program will match academics either working in institutional member universities, or who are individual members with a more senior staff member to:

  • Reflect on and build academic, personal, and professional skills
  • More effectively navigate accounting and finance research, education, and engagement opportunities
  • Grow their leadership capabilities, and
  • Identify opportunities to enhance their potential for career progression.

While the previous program has focused on ECRs, we would hope to extend this in the future to provide mentoring opportunities to academic members of all academic levels who feel they have a mentoring need.

Beginning in January 2026, AFAANZ will run the ECR Mentoring Program for five months from February to June 2026.
