I am especially grateful for the assistance and the support by our members and the current AFAANZ board members who assisted in revising and updating our founding documents this year, AFAANZ Constitution and AFAANZ By-laws, in order to bring them up-to-date and make them better suited for the environment that we work in.
My heartfelt thanks also go to our institutional members, researchers, committees, educators, doctoral students, SIGs and our sponsors – platinum sponsors Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and CPA Australia and bronze sponsors MYOB and AccountingPod, for their support and engagement with AFAANZ and me personally. I would also like to give special thanks to AFAANZ manager Tim Jones for his unwavering support and assistance in so many ways and for his understanding and always warm manner. He is truly “the glue that binds us together”.

The session explored how educators can help students better understand responsible AI use in study and future work. You can view the session slides here. We’re also pleased to share that we’ve launched a new set of free student-friendly courses on MYOB Academy across MYOB Business, Payroll and MYOB Practice. These courses are designed to help learners build practical skills, gain confidence with real workflows, and strengthen their job-readiness before entering the workforce.
Once students complete a course, they’ll automatically receive a certificate of achievement. They can download it, add it to their CV or LinkedIn profile, or share it with their network. You can explore the courses here:
These courses can be added to your curriculum as a required component or shared with students as an optional extension activity if they’d like to take their MYOB training further.
If you’d like to chat about any of this or explore how we can partner to support your students, please email Shailan. |
We are delighted to support AFAANZ as a Bronze sponsor. The support from AFAANZ members and the community make an innovation like AccountingPod possible. Judith, XingDong and the entire team at AccountingPod look forward to continuing to support the AFAANZ community. It was great catching up with you at the conference and dancing with you on the dance floor. We are very pleased to introduce: Authentic Assessment by AccountingPod. - Workplace Scenarios
- Data storytelling
- Transparent AI Interaction
- Judgement Evaluation
- Automated Evidence Capture
Let's take a look at how it works: | Closing the AI Readiness Gap
Authentic Assessment by AccountingPod is building the trusted learning, assessment and professional capability infrastructure for the AI-enabled accounting profession. Rather than viewing AI as a threat to academic integrity, AccountingPod enables institutions to redesign learning around authentic professional practice, where students learn to collaborate effectively with AI while demonstrating independent judgement, ethical decision-making and accountability.
The platform combines authentic industry-based learning, AI-assisted tutoring, instant formative feedback, behavioural learning analytics, identity assurance, competency mapping and evidence-based assessment into a single ecosystem. Every learning activity is designed to measure not only what students know, but how they think, how they justify their decisions, how they evaluate AI-generated recommendations, and how they communicate those decisions in professional contexts.
AccountingPod connects universities, professional accounting bodies, employers and learners through a common digital platform that supports the entire learning journey—from classroom education to professional accreditation and lifelong learning. By aligning educational outcomes with contemporary workplace expectations, the platform helps institutions modernise curricula, improve graduate employability, strengthen academic integrity, and provide employers with greater confidence in graduate capability.
Importantly, AccountingPod recognises the growing narrative turn in accounting. Financial reporting, sustainability reporting, integrated reporting, audit commentary, governance, risk management and strategic advisory services increasingly rely on high-quality written analysis and communication. Large Language Models excel at generating narrative, but professional accountants must be able to evaluate, challenge, refine and take responsibility for AI-generated content. AccountingPod therefore shifts assessment beyond knowledge reproduction towards critical evaluation, professional judgement and effective communication in an AI-enabled environment.
As higher education responds to financial pressures, changing student expectations and the rapid adoption of AI, institutions require solutions that are scalable, evidence-based and aligned with workforce needs. AccountingPod provides that capability by transforming assessment from a measure of memorisation into a demonstration of authentic professional competence. Our vision is to become the global standard for AI-enabled accounting education and professional capability assurance. We believe future graduates will be recognised not simply for what they know, but for how effectively they work with AI, exercise sound judgement, communicate with clarity and integrity, and solve the complex challenges facing organisations and society. AccountingPod is not simply an educational technology platform. It is the trusted infrastructure that enables universities, professional bodies and employers to prepare the next generation of accountants for an AI-enabled profession.
Finally, AFAANZ marks the end of the conference season for the team at AccountingPod. Our reflection from recent conferences to date: The Narrative Turn: Why AI Arrived at Exactly the Right Moment for Accounting Education - A Reflection |

Python Coding for Accounting and Finance Research |
|
|
|
presented by Dr Leonard Leye Li Overview
This course is designed to equip doctoral students and early career researchers in accounting and finance with foundational and practical skills in Python programming, tailored specifically for empirical research. I will cover core programming concepts, data manipulation techniques, data collection from databases and the web, natural language processing techniques, and modern statistical and machine-learning methods using Python. Through hands-on assignments and coding exercises, students will learn how to efficiently collect and clean data, perform statistical testing, build predictive models, and visualize results. The goal is not only to become competent in coding but also to use Python as a tool to enhance the quality and efficiency of academic research.
A distinctive feature of this workshop is that almost every module and session is built around understanding or replicating a published study from a top journal, such as Sloan's (1996, The Accounting Review) accrual anomaly, Kim et al.'s (2016 Journal of Accounting and Economics) option volatility smirk, Obaid and Pukthuanthong's (2022 Journal of Financial Economics) image sentiment, Chen et al.'s (2022, Journal of Accounting Research) earnings forecasting, de Kok's (2025 Management Science) detection of "non-answers" in earnings call, among many others. Emphasis will be placed on applications to real-world accounting and finance data, such as databases in WRDS, SEC filings, and textual data (e.g., 10-Ks and earnings-call transcripts). Thus, the Python skills you learn are grounded in the same empirical research you'll be expected to produce.
The outline below in my GitHub repository provides a detailed description of the material that is covered in the course. The course consists of two 2-hour online modules, which introduce the Python fundamentals for research (Module 1) and the pandas package for handling and analysing data (Module 2), followed by a two-day in-person workshop: Day 1 covers data collection from WRDS, web scraping, and LLM/generative-AI APIs (Modules 3), together with natural language processing and textual analysis (Modules 4), and Day 2 covers modern machine-learning methods for accounting and finance research, including classification, prediction and explainable AI (Module 5).
Modules 1-2: Friday 28 August 2026, four hours, online, 10:00 - 12:00 and 13:00 - 15:00 Modules 3-5: Thursday 3 September 2026, 10:00 - 12:00 and 13:00 - 15:00, and Friday 4 September 2026 10:00 - 12:00 and 13:00 - 15:00 in person(Room TBC at UNSW Sydney)
Course outline is available HERE. Participants must be AFAANZ Individual Members.
This course will be limited to 20 attendees - to register your interest, click HERE. |
