The Qualitative Research in Accounting Network (QualRAN) SIG is a community of scholars dedicated to advancing the practice, rigour, and creativity of qualitative research in accounting and related disciplines. It brings together researchers across all career stages, with a particular commitment to supporting PhD students and early career researchers in developing their qualitative research skills.
The SIG provides a forum for members to share practices, discuss emerging qualitative methods, and work through the practical and methodological challenges of fieldwork, interviews, ethnography, case studies, and other qualitative approaches. Past seminars and webinars, delivered by leading qualitative researchers, have addressed topics such as vignettes and netnography in qualitative accounting research, strategies for publishing qualitative work, and ways to enhance the impact of qualitative research. In a rapidly changing research landscape, QualRAN also provides a space to consider how new technologies, including generative AI and other digital tools, are reshaping qualitative data collection and analysis, and what this means for the integrity and future direction of the field.
QualRAN's activities include an Annual Meeting, webinars, and a PhD pitch competition, in which higher-degree research students present their research ideas to an expert panel and receive constructive feedback. Through these activities, QualRAN builds a welcoming, collegial, and supportive network for qualitative accounting researchers across Australia and New Zealand.
