2026 Doctoral Symposium Program
AFAANZ is proud to announce nominations are now being called for its annual Doctoral Symposium from students undertaking a PhD program at Institutional member Schools and Departments. This year's Doctoral Symposium is being held from Thursday 2 July to Friday 3 July 2026 at the Pullman Albert Park Hotel Melbourne, prior to the commencement of the AFAANZ conference. All details are provided in the Nomination form which has also been sent to Heads of AFAANZ Institutional Member Schools/Departments. The final date to nominate a student to attend this year’s Symposium is 27 February 2026.
The objectives of the Symposium are to: - Enable you to present an overview of your research (as described below) in a constructive forum and to receive feedback from other doctoral students and leading faculty;
- Guide you on the process for managing your thesis;

Offer advice as to how to improve the probability of publishing your research;
- Enable you to provide constructive feedback to other doctoral students; and
- Give you opportunities to interact with doctoral students from other universities and with leading faculty in accounting and finance.
Ideally students should be between 1/3 to 2/3 into the PhD program. The format of the Symposium will be such that students will have ample opportunity to interact with faculty members and other students on an informal basis. Further, participants are required to undertake prior reading of all PhD proposals within their study group, and they should come prepared to participate in the discussion of all proposals within their study group. Students are to arrange their own accommodation.
The Doctoral Symposium will be held at the Pullman Albert Park Hotel before the AFAANZ annual conference at the same venue. There is a $690 registration fee payable by the department of attending students. Students can also attend the annual conference for a discounted rate of $390 should they wish to attend. |

Following the resounding success of the 24th Accounting History Symposium, the Accounting History Special Interest Group (AHSIG) is delighted to announce its first event of 2026. The 25th Accounting History Symposium will take place on Saturday, 4 July 2025, at Pullman Albert Park Hotel, Melbourne, Australia. This year, we are honored to welcome Professor Karen McBride as our keynote speaker, with Dr Maryam Safari presiding as the session chair. |

Professor Karen McBride is a Professor of Accounting at the University of Portsmouth. A qualified Chartered Accountant and Senior Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy, she has established an international reputation for her research on accounting history and the historical foundations of social, environmental, and ecological accounting. Her research further encompasses corporate governance and ethics, environmental and corporate social responsibility reporting, and equity, diversity, and inclusion in accounting.

She currently serves as Chair of the Accounting History Special Interest Group of the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA) and as Co-Chair of the University of Portsmouth’s interdisciplinary Centre of Excellence for Heritage Innovation. Her contributions to the field have been recognised through annual prize-winning papers in the Accounting Historians Journal (2024) and Accounting History (2023). Professor McBride has also secured external research funding across all these areas from major bodies. She will deliver a keynote presentation titled “Stories, Narratives, and Golden Threads in Accounting History Research.” Drawing on her extensive body of work, her presentation will offer a critical examination of narrative construction and interpretive storytelling within accounting history.
In addition to this distinguished keynote, we invite scholars and researchers to participate by presenting their planned or ongoing research projects. Those interested are encouraged to submit a working paper or research proposal (maximum three pages, single-spaced), including the following details: - Project (working) title
- Background (or scenario for investigation)
- Main research objective in one sentence
- Concise key research question(s)
- Research methodology
- Period selection
- Limitations of the study
- Expected (original) contribution
The due date for submission of research proposals is Sunday, 19 April 2026. The proposals should be sent to acchis.sig@gmail.com (please also copy in maryam.safari@rmit.edu.au and lina.xu@rmit.edu.au). Please leave a note in the email listing all authors in the specified order of authorship. In addition to the presentation of research proposals on accounting history, a panel of esteemed scholars will be in attendance to provide feedback and engage in discussions with participants. To recognize outstanding contributions, a $200 prize will be awarded to the best research proposal presented in person. The winner will be selected by the panel and announced at the symposium.

Special Issue in Pacific Accounting Review – Accounting Education in the Pacific Region: Challenges, Innovations, and Future Directions
We invite submissions for a special issue of Pacific Accounting Review dedicated to advancing research in accounting education with a focus on the Pacific region. This region presents a rich educational landscape, offering unique accounting educational challenges and opportunities that merit deeper exploration. This special issue aims to highlight innovative and forward-thinking approaches to accounting education that are of relevance to the Pacific region.
We welcome contributions that address, but are not limited to, the following themes: - Engaging diverse and evolving student cohorts

Integrating Indigenous perspectives
- Meeting professional expectations
- Navigating accreditation challenges
- Fostering academic careers

Adopting emerging technologies in accounting education
- Strengthening industry engagement and employability outcomes
We also welcome papers that explore broader issues relevant to accounting education in the Pacific region. Submissions may include empirical research, theoretical contributions, case studies, descriptive and reflective pieces or exploratory studies that offer meaningful insights into the region’s accounting educational practices and priorities. We are pleased to announce the 8th Annual Accounting Workshop on Experiments (AWE). The main conference is to be held on Friday 29 May 2026 at Deakin University, Melbourne Downtown Corporate Centre.
The keynote address will be presented by Professor Jeffrey Hales, the University of Texas at Austin. Professor Hales is a leading researcher in accounting and sustainability, and a member of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB). The main conference will be preceded by the doctoral forum on the afternoon of Thursday 28 May 2026, with a masterclass conducted by Professor Michael Davern, the University of Melbourne.
AWE seeks papers that employ experiments to investigate accounting questions. Early-stage papers are particularly encouraged. Submitted work must represent original work that has not been published or accepted for publication in a journal. At least one author for every accepted paper must register for AWE and be prepared to present at the main conference. Paper submission date is 6 March 2026. For all details, click HERE |

The goal of this conference is to expand the diversity and scope of international accounting research, through increased understanding and awareness of the challenges and opportunities of international accounting. Original and rigorous research will provide academics, practitioners, and regulators with deeper insights into international accounting issues. Journal of International Accounting Research (JIAR) continues to welcome innovative and high-quality research that examines how accounting data affects capital market participants. Papers that address interesting and innovative research questions in all areas are welcomed. Papers can be submitted for consideration in one of two tracks: Plenary Session submissions or Concurrent Session submissions.
