A highlight of 2025 was the attendance of 374 members at the annual conference in Brisbane. We also saw the continuation of the Insight Series with ten seminars throughout the year. We thank CA ANZ and our SIGs for organising interesting and insightful sessions that continue to engage our members. Another success was the 2nd year of CPA Australia’s Academia and Industry seminars, with the 3 seminars discussing topics that engage our members with industry. We look forward to continuing these important events and engagements in 2026.
We extend our congratulations to Nithara Godewatta from Monash University and Caitlin Brines from University of NSW, for being selected to represent AFAANZ at the 2026 EAA and AAA Doctoral Colloquiums, respectively.
Submissions are now open for the 2026 AFAANZ Conference, which will be held in Melbourne during the week beginning 5 July 2026. We are delighted to announce that the two plenary speakers will be Anastasiya Lipnevich, Professor of Educational Psychology at the City University of New York and Robert Knechel, Distinguished Professor and Frederick E. Fisher Eminent Scholar in Accounting, University of Florida. The submission deadline is Friday, February 6, 2026, and the Call for Papers is included below in this Newsletter.

AFAANZ 2026 Conference Call for Papers
AFAANZ is devoted to a broad spectrum of accounting and finance research, and we welcome innovative research approaches as well as those that are well established. Paper submissions are invited for the 2026 Conference in the broad areas of accounting, auditing, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, education, finance, management accounting, tax, and other related fields. Best paper awards and outstanding reviewer awards will also be presented at the 2026 conference. AFAANZ encourages new and developing researchers to attend the Conference.
AFAANZ 2026 will be held face-to-face at the Pullman Albert Park Hotel in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia from Sunday 5 July to Tuesday 7 July 2026. The two plenary speakers at the 2026 Conference will be: Guidelines for Submission

All submitted papers will undergo a blind review process conducted by the Technical Committee. To maintain the integrity of this process, please ensure that your submission contains no identifying information. This includes your name, address, email, acknowledgments, or any expressions of gratitude. The first page of your manuscript should only include the paper's title, abstract, and keywords. Any additional information typically found on a cover page must be entered during the online submission process.
While there is no required manuscript format or page limit, full working papers are expected as submissions. Submission Date

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST IN OFFERING AN AFDEN COURSE IN 2026
Since 2015, the AFAANZ Doctoral Education Network (AFDEN) has offered a suite of doctoral-level subjects suitable for accounting and finance students in their first year of study. AFAANZ is seeking expressions of interest from academics interested in offering a course in 2026. Whilst courses in all topic areas will be considered, AFAANZ is particularly interested in offering additional courses in accounting. The delivery, duration and timing of courses is flexible and can be offered fully or partially online and may include weekend classes. Teaching into AFDEN should be recognised by the home university’s workload model and is not remunerated by AFAANZ.

2026 marks a milestone in Canadian accounting academia. Since the founding of the CAAA on December 2, 1976, influential research from Canadian accounting scholars has shaped practice, policy, and pedagogy across Canada and beyond. The CAAA 2026 Annual Conference, to be held in person, will bring together prominent scholars, educators, practitioners, and emerging voices to celebrate the enduring impact of accounting scholarship and look ahead to the innovations that will drive our field forward.
It is our great pleasure to invite submissions in all areas of accounting. We encourage submissions that aim to expand the scope, reach, and societal impact of accounting research beyond the discipline itself, using any rigorous research methods. Submissions in English and French are both highly welcome. The conference submission platform will open in early December 2025.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS Informing the IASB Standard Setting Process
IAAER – KPMG Research Opportunities – Round 9
The International Association for Accounting Education and Research (IAAER) and KPMG International are pleased to invite research proposals under the Informing the IASB Standard Setting Process Research Program. The program supports scholarly research that aims to provide objective, evidence-based inputs to the IASB’s standard setting decisions. Up to four research grants of US$20,000 each will be awarded under this program. Interim and final findings of funded projects will be presented at three events that will include representatives from the IASB and the IAAER Program Advisory Committee. Funding for this program is provided by KPMG International.

We invite scholars, practitioners, and researchers to contribute to “Accounting through the ages: Lessons for modern challenges,” a conference that bridges our rich accounting heritage with contemporary challenges. The discipline of Accounting at the University of Wollongong has a distinguished history of supporting research in accounting history, a legacy established by Professor Gaffikin’s scholarship and leadership. The conference will be held at the University of Wollongong’s main campus, renowned for its picturesque setting and state-of-the-art facilities.
Submission and Review of Papers: Papers written in the English language and complying with the Accounting History manuscript style should be submitted online in Word format no later than 13th February 2026. All papers will be subject to a double-blind refereeing process. A special issue of the journal on the conference theme is scheduled to be published following the event.
Notification of papers accepted for inclusion in the conference program should be made by 10 April 2026.

Outstanding International Accounting Dissertation Award The International Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association invites submissions for the Outstanding International Accounting Dissertation Award, which honors an exceptional doctoral dissertation completed during the previous year.
Dissertations will be evaluated by an Award Committee appointed by the Section President. In determining the award recipient, the Committee will consider the importance of the research questions, the quality of the execution of research, and the contribution to the literature. The award recipient will be announced and formally recognized at the Annual Meeting of the American Accounting Association in August. Eligibility and Submission Guidelines - Doctoral dissertations successfully defended during the most recent calendar year are eligible for consideration with topics in areas of financial, managerial, auditing, taxation, and information systems.

Authors wishing to be considered for the award should submit the following materials to the Award Committee Chair no later than March 15 annually for dissertations defended during the previous calendar year (i.e., no later than March 15, 2026, for dissertations defended in 2025):

A dissertation abstract (Word or PDF, max 7 pages) describing the research question, importance of the research, theoretical foundations, methodology, and key findings.
- A letter from the dissertation committee chair (Word or PDF, max 2 pages) confirming the dissertation defense date, which may also serve as a nomination statement that assesses the importance and quality of the work.

Congress on Public Accounting
The 5th Public Sector Accounting International Congress is a technical-scientific initiative organised by the Portuguese Order of Certified Accountants (OCC) in partnership with several higher education institutions. It stands as an international platform for debate and knowledge sharing on public sector accounting and financial management.
The theme of the 5th edition is: "Public Sector Accounting and Accountability: Global Challenges and Opportunities.”. Date and Venue: The 5th Public Sector Accounting International Congress will take place on 19–20 March 2026, at the School of Public Management, Communication and Tourism of the Bragança Polytechnic University, in the city of Mirandela. Organisation: This event is jointly organised by the Portuguese Order of Certified Accountants (OCC) and the School of Public Management, Communication and Tourism of the Bragança Polytechnic University.
Paper Submission: The 5th Public Sector Accounting International Congress will address the theme "Public Sector Accounting and Accountability: Global Challenges and Opportunities”, promoting a broad reflection on transparency, accountability, and the ability of public administrations to adapt to an increasingly complex international context. The event highlights the importance of public accounting as a tool for accountability, institutional trust, and innovation in public financial management, while encouraging research, international cooperation, and the sharing of best practices.
Open to a wide diversity of current topics, the congress seeks to stimulate interdisciplinary and complementary approaches, foster the dissemination of scientific knowledge, and promote the sharing of experiences and transfer of know-how between academics, researchers, and professionals. This edition also aims to reflect on emerging trends and global challenges in public accounting and accountability, highlighting their impact on education, research, and professional practice in a context of growing demands for transparency, responsibility, and innovation.
This call for papers invites submissions that explore, among other topics, history of public sector accounting, the implications of accountability, the usefulness of financial reporting, the adoption of accrual accounting, sustainability, and the impact of technological advances on public financial management. Both theoretical and empirical studies are welcome, using qualitative and/or quantitative methods, conceptual papers, or literature reviews that contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field. Interdisciplinary and practice-oriented research is also encouraged.
